The Unexpected Encounter: A Humbling Experience
When Reality Doesn't Meet Expectations
29 December 2024
Embarking on the journey of writing and publishing a book is an exhilarating experience. It's a labour of love, countless hours poured into crafting every word, and the hope that your work will resonate with readers. So, when the opportunity arises to connect with someone who has read your book, the excitement is palpable. Yet, sometimes, reality has a way of humbling us in the most unexpected ways.
It was my first time encountering such a situation, and I'm still trying to recover from its sting. The moment began innocuously enough, with someone known to me mentioning that one of her relatives had read my book. Naturally, I felt a surge of joy and anticipation. Here was a chance to engage with a reader, to hear their thoughts, and perhaps learn how the magic of my words has touched someone else's life.
Filled with enthusiasm, I approached her relative with a big smile. 'Hey, I heard you have read my book,' I began, my heart thumping with excitement.
'Err, yes,' came the hesitant reply. A flicker of uncertainty crossed her face, but I brushed it aside, determined to make a connection.
'Which one did you end up reading?' I asked, eager to delve into a conversation about the characters and plot I had so lovingly created.
Her expression grew more confused and uncomfortable. 'Err...'
Sensing her discomfort, I tried to steer the conversation differently. 'Can you remember the cover of the book?' I inquired, hoping that a visual might jog her memory.
'Err... No,' she responded, the awkwardness between us growing by the second.
I could feel my heart sinking, but I refused to give up. Mustering my resolve, I asked, 'Can you recall the storyline?'
'Err... no,' she admitted, her discomfort mirroring my own.
At that moment, I wanted nothing more than to find a hole to crawl into. But, putting on a brave face, I smiled and said, 'Okay,' before walking away, my heart heavy with disappointment.
As I walked away, mopping the floor with my heart, I couldn't help but reflect on the experience. It was a harsh reminder that not everyone will connect with or remember our work, no matter how much it means to us. Perhaps she had read my book in passing, or maybe it wasn't her cup of tea. Regardless, the encounter left me feeling small and embarrassed.
But there's also a lesson in this experience. It taught me that while seeking validation and connection through our creations is natural, we must also be prepared for moments when reality doesn't meet our expectations. Every reader's experience is unique; not everyone will resonate with our work similarly.
In the end, this humbling encounter has strengthened my resolve to keep writing, to keep sharing my stories, and to cherish the connections I make with readers who find meaning in my words. After all, it's the journey and the passion for storytelling that truly matter, even when the path is dotted with moments of unexpected humility.
Balancing Contrasting Roles: A Journey of Adaptability, Resilience, and Growth
Reflections on a Year of Chaos, Laughter, and Satisfaction
22 December 2024
As we wrap up 2024, I’ve been reflecting on a year that’s been chaotic, hilarious, soul-searching, and exhausting—but also deeply satisfying. Balancing life as a procurement professional in transport and logistics while pursuing my passion as an aspiring author has taught me invaluable lessons. Here are the insights I’ve gained from juggling these contrasting roles.
Adapting to New Corporate Cultures
Adapting to a new corporate culture is like learning a new language. The process of decoding acronyms, understanding new workflows, and adjusting to different processes showed me how vital adaptability is in thriving through change. In my role as a procurement professional, I’ve had to navigate the complexities of logistics, from negotiating with suppliers to managing the intricacies of supply chains. Each new environment presented its own set of challenges and learning curves, reinforcing the importance of flexibility and openness to new experiences.
Embracing Feedback
Feedback is a gift, not a verdict. Whether it’s constructive criticism on a manuscript or a tough review of a project strategy, I’ve learned to take feedback on the chin, avoid personalising it, and use it as a stepping stone to improve. In the corporate world, feedback helps refine strategies and enhance performance. In the creative realm, it shapes the narrative and enriches storytelling. Embracing feedback has allowed me to grow professionally and creatively, transforming perceived setbacks into opportunities for development.
Managing Deadlines
Deadlines are universal villains. Whether it’s an RFQ (Request for Quotation) or a manuscript edit, neither respects plans for rest or sanity. Managing them taught me resilience. The pressure of meeting deadlines in the logistics sector has honed my ability to prioritise tasks and maintain composure under stress. Similarly, the deadlines in writing ensure that I stay disciplined and committed to my creative goals. The key is approaching each deadline strategically, breaking down tasks into manageable steps and staying focused on the end goal.
Balancing Perspectives
Writing from two points of view (POVs) mirrors real life. Balancing two voices on the page while navigating diverse workplace dynamics has shown me the importance of perspective and empathy. In my professional role, understanding the viewpoints of various stakeholders—from colleagues and clients to suppliers and customers—enhances collaboration and decision-making. In writing, exploring different characters’ perspectives deepens the narrative and fosters a richer connection with the audience. This dual approach underscores the value of seeing the world through multiple lenses and appreciating the diversity of experiences.
Mastering Time Management
Time management is survival. Juggling deliveries and edits has taught me that prioritising isn’t about doing it all but being fully present in what matters now. In my career, effective time management involves coordinating schedules, managing resources, and ensuring timely execution of projects. In my creative pursuits, it means dedicating focused periods to writing and allowing time for reflection and inspiration. Learning to prioritise tasks based on urgency and importance has been crucial in balancing my dual roles and maintaining a sense of equilibrium.
Learning from Diverse Experiences
Lessons come from everywhere. Whether solving a sourcing challenge or plotting a character’s journey, I’ve found that every problem is an opportunity to grow. The analytical skills required in logistics—such as problem-solving, strategic thinking, and negotiation—have proven invaluable in my writing process. Conversely, the creativity and imagination fostered through storytelling have enriched my approach to professional challenges. This cross-pollination of skills and insights highlights the interconnectedness of different domains and the endless potential for learning and growth.
Embracing Problem-Solving
Logistics is a crash course in problem-solving. If I can negotiate with suppliers under pressure, I can definitely handle characters refusing to follow my plot! The ability to think on my feet and develop innovative solutions in the face of logistical hurdles has translated seamlessly into my creative endeavours. Whether it’s navigating a supply chain disruption or untangling a complicated plot twist, the principles of problem-solving—analysing the situation, brainstorming solutions, and implementing effective strategies—remain consistent.
Compartmentalising Creativity
Creativity strikes at the worst times. Plot twists unravel themselves during white papers or strategy meetings. Compartmentalising has become my superpower. The challenge of managing creative inspiration amid professional obligations has necessitated a methodical approach to compartmentalisation. By setting clear boundaries and allocating dedicated time for creative exploration, I’ve been able to harness my creative bursts without compromising my professional responsibilities. This structured approach ensures that my career and passion receive the attention they deserve.
Embracing the Chaos
This year has taught me that it’s not about perfect balance—it’s about embracing chaos and learning from it. The journey of balancing a demanding career with a creative passion is inherently turbulent, filled with highs and lows, achievements and setbacks. Rather than striving for an elusive sense of balance, I’ve learned to find harmony in the midst of chaos. Each challenge and triumph adds depth to my experiences, shaping me into a more resilient, adaptable, and fulfilled individual.
In conclusion, juggling contrasting roles requires a delicate dance of adaptability, resilience, and continuous learning. The lessons I’ve gained from this journey are invaluable, providing a blueprint for navigating the complexities of modern life. As I look forward to the coming year, I carry the insights and experiences that have shaped 2024, ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities 2025 would bring.
